Key details
OpenAI has announced bold new steps to transform ChatGPT from a chatbot into a comprehensive, chat-driven operating system. This initiative includes rolling out an SDK to bolster collaboration with enterprises and app developers and launching AgentKit, a suite of developer tools for building advanced AI agents.
At a recent briefing, Nick Turley, OpenAI's head of product for ChatGPT, clarified that the company aims to develop a “super assistant” extending far beyond simple chat interactions. The vision is to integrate web and mobile experiences where ChatGPT acts as a central interface, guiding users to various apps and services.
A key toolkit introduced is AgentKit, which offers a unified platform including an Agent Builder featuring a visual drag-and-drop interface for designing multi-agent workflows. ChatKit allows easy embedding of chat-based AI agents into applications. Enhanced performance measurement tools, called Evals, support automated grading and third-party model evaluation. Reinforcement fine-tuning capabilities enable developers to customize AI models further. These tools are available under standard API pricing, with Agent Builder currently in beta.
OpenAI also highlighted Codex, their AI coding model, which has graduated from research preview to general availability. New Codex developer tools include code query and editing via Slack, along with an SDK and analytics to track enterprise usage.
Notable enterprises like Canva, Zillow, Spotify, Klarna, and Ramp have begun leveraging these tools, significantly boosting operational efficiencies.
OpenAI’s progress signals a strategic evolution toward positioning ChatGPT as a foundational operating system for AI-enhanced productivity and autonomy.
As Nick Turley summarized, "ChatGPT will be the starting point for users, who will eventually be steered toward other applications and websites," emphasizing the company’s ambition to create a robust AI ecosystem rather than a standalone chatbot.
