Tesla Integrates Grok AI Conversational Assistant into Vehicles with 2025.26 Update

Tesla has officially launched Grok AI, a hands-free conversational assistant designed to enhance the in-car experience for its drivers, as part of the 2025.26 software update that began rolling out on July 12, 2025. This integration marks a significant development in Tesla's approach to utilizing artificial intelligence within its vehicles, enabling users to interact with the AI using either the App Launcher or voice commands. Grok AI allows drivers to engage with the vehicle in a chat-style format, adopting various personalities such as 'Storyteller' or 'Unhinged' for diverse interactions.

Grok AI comes pre-installed in all new Tesla vehicles delivered after the launch date, but owners of older models may also have access through over-the-air updates, provided their vehicles are equipped with AMD infotainment processors and are running software version 2025.26 or higher. Currently, Grok does not have the capability to control vehicle functions like climate control or navigation, which remain managed through traditional voice command systems. This limitation means that while Grok can engage in conversation and answer user queries, it cannot directly execute vehicle commands.

The AI operates in beta mode and does not require users to create separate accounts for its activation, although this could change in the future. Tesla emphasizes user privacy by ensuring that interactions with Grok are securely processed by xAI, maintaining anonymity unless users choose to log in for syncing their interaction history.
