Scale AI, a prominent player in artificial intelligence, has announced that it is cutting 200 employees, which represents 14% of its workforce, in response to a substantial $14.3 billion investment from Meta. This restructuring has also seen founder Alexandr Wang transition to a role at Meta, leading to interim CEO Jason Droege taking charge. In a memo detailing the layoffs, Droege cited the company's rapid expansion within generative AI and a buildup of excessive bureaucracy as primary reasons for the downsizing.=

Despite the challenging news, Droege indicated that the company remains robustly funded and plans to increase hiring within its application business units later this year. These sectors will focus on enterprise and public sectors. The decision to lay off employees also coincides with the termination of contracts for 500 contractors across various global operations.

Joe Osborne, a Scale AI spokesperson, emphasized that the restructuring aims to streamline the company’s data business to better serve its generative AI clients. This overhaul comes at a critical time when major clients such as OpenAI and Google have reportedly begun reducing their engagements with Scale AI, showing a potential fallout from Meta's investment and Wang's move.

Droege expressed appreciation for the contributions of those laid off, saying, 'I want to extend our deepest gratitude for their valuable contributions and dedication to our company.' He noted that these adjustments are part of a broader strategy to enhance agility in the fast-evolving AI marketplace. Scale AI had previously employed roughly 1,400 staff globally, and the current changes reflect a significant shift in direction following a period of rapid growth in the AI sector.
